eRTU – Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for Grid Telemetry and Automation

Overview

eRTU is Elseta’s next-generation advanced remote terminal unit designed for secondary substations, ring-main units (RMUs), and other distribution-grid assets where reliability, fast fault isolation/service restoration, and rich power-quality data are essential. The modular platform combines a Communications & Measurement Unit (CMU) with bay control modules (BCM1P), delivering secure control, high-precision measurement, and self-healing network logic in a compact package widely used in smart grid automation projects. As one of the innovative manufacturers in the sector, Elseta ensures the eRTU supports both traditional and modern automation scenarios, including the role of an RTU in substation environments.

Typical applications

  • Medium-voltage (10–42 kV) distribution feeders
  • Secondary substations automation (MV/LV distribution)
  • Fault detection with bidirectional capabilities
  • Fault-managed feeders and loop automation schemas
  • Feeder protection with integrated auto-reclose functions
  • Transformer and power line overload control functions
  • Integration of distributed energy resources (DER), renewable-generation plants, and energy-storage sites
  • Industrial micro-grids and critical facilities
  • Transformer health and power-quality monitoring
  • Deployment of remote telemetry units in MV and LV applications
  • Support for RMU-based architectures, including FRTU RMU configurations

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Fault Management – Bidirectional fault detection with automatic fault-triggered isolation and both transient and permanent fault recognition. This enables the eRTU to serve as a dependable remote telemetry unit for utilities requiring advanced response capabilities.
  • Remote Control Excellence – Secure remote and local operation of all feeder switching devices with real-time status monitoring, making the device suitable as a modern remote control unit for grid-edge equipment.
  • Self-Healing Network Architecture – Automatic network reconfiguration following MV faults minimises outage duration and impact. These capabilities align with evolving expectations for RTU automation across utilities and MV/LV networks.
  • High-Precision Power Quality Analysis – Advanced MV/LV measurements with detailed power-quality metrics and disturbance recording—essential functions for a SCADA remote terminal unit operating in demanding electrical environments.
  • Cybersecurity by Design – Multi-layered security with port hardening, integrated firewall, encrypted communications, and IEC 62351 compliance to ensure that even remote terminal units deployed in exposed or distributed locations remain secure.
  • Flexible Communication Options – Multiple connectivity paths, including cellular, fibre, and legacy protocols with redundant communication channels. This allows the eRTU to fit seamlessly into existing infrastructures, whether acting as an FRTU or functioning as a remote terminal unit in SCADA systems.
  • Asset Health Monitoring – Transformer condition monitoring with predictive analytics to optimise maintenance and extend equipment life—key functions expected from high-performing remote telemetry units offered by forward-looking manufacturers.
  • Simplified Integration – REST-compliant API enabling easy integration with existing SCADA systems, third-party applications, and deployments that require a flexible remote terminal unit RTU architecture.
  • Field-Ready Design – Compact, rugged construction with extended temperature range, low power consumption, and optional battery backup for reliable operation in substation environments where an RTU in a substation must withstand harsh conditions.
  • Scalable Platform – A modular design allowing customisation from basic monitoring to full automation, including over-the-air firmware updates—ideal for utilities expanding their fleet of remote terminal units.
